Radian6 Engagement Console: A Social CRM Tool for the Agency Toolbelt

By Shannon Johnson, Social Media Specialist at Sitewire.

What is Radian6?

Radian6 is one of the leading web-based social monitoring and research platforms available. Radian6 essentially aggregates conversations happening all over the web – micromedia (Twitter, FriendFeed), forums, blogs, Facebook, Myspace, video sites, image sites, and beyond – so  that marketers, PR professionals, brand managers and the like can mine invaluable consumer insights that help you make smarter business decisions. Radian6 comes in two forms – the Dashboard and the Engagement Console. The Dashboard serves as a research hub; you can utilize a variety of widgets to dig deeper into what people are saying about you or your clients, where that conversation is happening, what topics led to a spike in conversation, who is leading or influencing these conversations, and what the sentiment of that conversation was.

What is the Radian6 Engagement Console?

The Engagement Console, on the other hand, complements the Dashboard as a desktop application (similar to Seesmic or TweetDeck) that populates feeds or “stacks” of conversations in real-time. Why is this so cool, you ask? Many reasons. For one, you can keep an eye on multiple Twitter accounts, a personal Facebook profile, a brand Facebook page, AND numerous streams of relevant conversations happening around the web – all in one place. For two, you can respond to conversations within the Console. For three, you can categorize, tag, assign notes, and assign posts to other team members for response. Quickly. All of these changes communicate back to the Dashboard so you can later pull reports of team effectiveness and analyze themes in content and sources (types of individuals discussing your brand).

My Friend "Meowadays" Is Catching Heat for Perhaps Inappropriate Yet Hilarious Crocheted Cat Toys Sold on Etsy

One of my best friends is obsessed with cats. And crocheting. And according to some of the recent buzz that has picked up about her, she just may enjoy being a bit "offensive." So what?

She operates an Esty shop called Meowadays and sells organic cat nip cat toys that resemble bombs, eyeballs, poop with corn in it, tampons, veiny hearts, penises... Some may not find it funny, but a lot of people do. That's why she's sold nearly 200 items in the past 6 months and has 100% positive feedback.

Jezebel recently featured her tampon cat toy, which led to some immedate sales according to my pal. I have a feeling the story is also what led blogger and women's rights activist Melinda Tankard Reist to share her two cents with NineMSN. Honestly I think Reist is doing good by shedding light on parts of our culture that are often ignored or dismissed - the sexualization and objectification of girls and women, helping other women share their stories. But saying, “The image of the cat chewing on the penis toy suggests bestiality,” (seen here) and “It imitates that the cat is involved in a pornographic act. It's degrading” ... that's a bit of a stretch. Bestiality? C'mon.

I'm supportive of my friend, obviously, and I think what she's doing - making people laugh while doing what she loves - is amazing and inspiring. If it's not for you, it's not for you. The most important thing to keep in mind is that people are buying her stuff. People do like what she's doing. There's a market for this. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Same goes for anything else sold anywhere else.

So, who wants to buy some poo engrained with corn kernels for a furry friend???

I've gained certified nerd status.

The time has come for me to join the Four Eyes Club. Apparently I have astigmatism. But, the doctor assured me my eyes are not diseased. And he says I need to take a break from work / looking at a computer screen every 20 minutes. And he says you should too. So that's cool. I mean, you can't disregard doctor's orders!
